Islamabad, October 09, 2012: Bytes for All, Pakistan, is in deep shock on hearing the sad news of a brutal attack on world renowned, 14 year old, peace and human rights activist Malala Yousafzai from Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It was a well known fact that her life had been under constant threat for a long time for her women rights work that she was doing in her community. She was attacked today by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, a terrorist organization, while she was returning from her school with her schoolmates.
Malala and her two schoolmates were seriously injured, and were immediately rushed to a local hospital before being shifted to Peshawar for better healthcare and security. As per the latest new reports, her doctors are trying their best to save her life and are suggesting to shift her abroad for surgery.
The 14 year old Malala proved herself as a symbol of courage and bravery through her uncompromised activism for women’s education and human rights during the Taliban’s oppressive occupation of Swat. This outstanding achievement led her to receive first ever National Peace Prize by Government of Pakistan, and was also nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize by advocacy group KidsRights Foundation in 2011.
Malala is a staunch supporter of Take Back The Tech campaign and would stand for all human rights worthy causes, especially promoting education among young girls in her province.
This attack on Malala is yet another failure of the government and security agencies, when they could not protect a renowned human rights and peace activist. She is an irreplaceable asset for the nation.
This incident and several such attacks in the past on human rights defenders and journalists throughout the country poses some serious questions to the human rights record of this government. With Pakistan's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the UN Human Rights Council due in three weeks, we urge the government to improve human rights situation and protect its citizens from extremism and violent radicalization spreading in the country.
Bytes for All team joins the whole nation in praying for the speedy recovery of Malala Yousufzai and her injured classmates.
Attacks on innocent children such as the one today blatantly expose the cowardly and inhumane nature of terrorist organizations such as Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). In addition, such events further reinforce the fact that the government should stop appeasing these organizations and their sympathizers in order to establish a peaceful, progressive and prosperous Pakistan.
More power to all Malalas of the nation. We are praying for you Malala Yousafzai and your friends' speedy recovery.
