TBTT Proposed Activities for 2011

Proposed Activities for 2011

1. Mapping the VAW in Pakistan

Violence Against Women (VAW) in Pakistan is endemic. It happens in many forms and in many places. It happens in the home, at work, in public spaces and increasingly via the Internet, mobile phones and social networking spaces. There are many roots, reasons and causes for this.

Bytes for All (B4A), Pakistan in collaboration with several women rights organization in the country will make an effort to map the available data on violence against women in Pakistan. B4A is partnering with Aurat Foundation, who collects this data and publishes it in an annual report. This data will be mapped on the Take Back The Tech Website in different categories for greater access and awareness by the masses.

2. Young Activists Award

This activity is meant to engage the spirit of activism in Pakistani schoolchildren. We plan to launch a creative challenge to enhance awareness and engage the spirit of peaceful human rights activism among Pakistani schoolchildren all over the country by encouraging them to create art works to confront, challenge and explore violence against women in online and offline spaces. This activity will not only deepen the understanding of the young children about the importance of gender equality and activism against gender injustices, but also help implement the benefits of this campaign within the masses.

  • To recruit young TBTTiers from schools;
  • To raise awareness about gender violence from early years of development among school children;
  • To train young minds to become vigilant towards domestic violence within their environments.

Each school will be given three cash awards.

3. Hand Mapping – Wall of Resistance

Bytes for All, Pakistan and Aware Girls in northern City of Peshawar in Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa province will organize a major event inviting young girls from universities and colleges. In this event, there will be a panel discussion about online safety, security and privacy. After the event, the participants will be invited for hand mapping on a large canvass. We are calling it a symbolic “wall of resistance”. The same canvass then will be displayed at the local museum or University’s Women Studies department.

4. Radio shows

We have already finalized at least two Radio Shows focusing on violence targeting communities because of their gender or sexual identity. These shows will include marginalized segments of society including Transgenders.

5. Celebrity Endorsements

We are already working hard to get more mainstream music/cricket/media and political celebrities on endorsing the Take Back The Tech Campaign. We are planning to get some of the celebrities to our Take Back The Tech events too. Details will be shared in due course.

6. Sheroes of 2011

We are planning to gather and upload the stories of select Sheroes from year 2011, who have done something great for the country and/or larger community. These Sheroes include young girls and women, who have achieved success and fame in year 2011.

7. VAW Poster – dissemination in colleges and universities

B4A will develop a VAW poster with some info regarding 16 days campaign and disseminate it far and wide in universities and colleges.

8. Projection Storm

B4A is planning projection storm events in two large cities of Pakistan – Lahore and Karachi. The idea is to show TBTT campaign at crowded places via projection on the walls of buildings.

9. Video Interviews and blogs endorsement

As was done last year, we will reach out to range of stakeholders for their interviews/endorsement of the campaign and upload them at TBTT website.

10. 16 Days - 16 Videos: Activism by Tribal Women in Pakistan!

For the first time ever, Take Back The Tech via Sughar will reach out to tribal women in remote areas of Sindh and Balochistan. Sughar is engaging with these tribal women to End Honor Killings and cultural violence against women. Sughar will make 16 videos every day of the 16 days of the Campaign with women talking about their rights. These videos of the tribal women will be mapped and disseminated via Take Back The Tech network for wider outreach and dissemination. This is an effort to connect these forgotten, remote parts of the world with mainstream struggle for women rights.
